Frog-Cow Monster in Matthew Sawyer’s Pazuzu Trilogy

April 20, 2010

The monster materializing when David performs a miracle for his mother is yet another creature I sketched in college.  I did an oil painting of that monster while still in school.  The University of Wisconsin – Whitewater has the artwork in their vaults somewhere.  I think the vault was behind the Crossman Gallery.  It may still be.  Although, I took a picture.

Below is the sketch of the creature I called a “Domovoy,” a Slavic household spirit. Upon christening the monster, I gave no thought to the perversion of spirit’s benevolent concept.

Here is the oil painting I left behind after graduation from college. The creature found new life in my “Pazuzu” Trilogy (sans udder).
