I'll Let You Read My Mail

Here’s a copy of an email soliciting proofreaders from friends and family…

“I think the lot of my friends and family have given up on my writing. Most everyone has been frustratingly silent about the ebooks I’ve emailed folks. I don’t know what people think. If you’re horrified, that’s OK – that’s good. I’m setting that mood. Go to Smashwords, Amazon, Barnes & Noble or wherever you find my ebooks online and tell everyone what you think.

“Typos and gross negligence of my manuscripts aside, I know what I’m doing. I know how to tell a story – I’m convinced people don’t want to read me tell it. That’s disappointing, but I stubbornly accept my approach is way-off mainstream. It look amateur. I’ve struggled to correct that and I have made progress (all those revision of my Pazuzu Trilogy are evidence – the Fourth, Eighth and Ninth are especially noteworthy). Just so you know, a few folks have told me they prefer the tone I set with a Passive Voice. I realize a vast majority of people don’t and professional publishers won’t even consider putting the garbage in print. Maybe if I was Cormac McCarthy or Tom Wolfe. Alas, I am not.

“I’m pursuing a professional approach toward my writing. My two best and latest are mainstream and written in an Active Voice – I promise, I’m not just saying that again. If you find a passage that says otherwise, let me and I’ll fix it. I hope it’s evident I will. I’m serious about writing – specifically about the mythology I collected and sketched earlier in my life. The monsters do have life and they’ve always been narrative.

“So you know, my Pazuzu Trilogy and Gaunt Rainbow have already been rewritten. They, too, are genuinely written in an Active Voice – I’ve stopped telling those white lies and have lain myself prostate before the Blessed Grammarian and promised I will stop forcing my perception of the world upon readers. Really, you live it now. I say the revised stories read like lightning. One acquaintance told me it looks “professional.” He then put it down to play a video game. There is that obstacle, too. Oh, how I pray Enron returns and seizes control of the Republican Party and the United States – it’s coming. Did Koch buy Enron?

“I hope you like them. They’re my best so far – oh, they’re horror – weird, gross and inappropriate horror. I’m tame. I promise, you won’t be bit or catch a disease or lose anything less substantial. Here you have Unction and Midwestern Days of Noah. They’re both really about those days before the Deluge lived again. They incorporate the mythology that lays the groundwork for the tales told in the Pazuzu Trilogy and Gaunt Rainbow. You don’t have to read those, they are fantasy and I realize few people have the patience for the obsessive descriptions of the worlds therein.

“These ebooks are real-world, in the sense they’re still fiction. I think you’ll enjoy them. Give them a chance. I want to tell you what’s been going through my head for years – decades if one was to peak into my archived sketchbooks.”

And still, my Email Inbox is undisturbed.
