Our Lord Weathercock shares the regional mythology of a damned Southern Wisconsin town. This story of cults, monsters and home-schooled magicians emulates Luke 17:26 – “And as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.“
There are new gods and this is where they manifest. Here in Wister Town, a retired farmer is harassed by a coven of aspiring juvenile witches. His name is Bill De Corbin and the arthritic man spends an inexplicably warm winter alone in his small house. Trouble comes to him when pubescent children vandalize his backyard and steal his keepsake weather vane. This being where the tale is told, Mr. De Corbin concludes he needs a monster to scare away the thieving brats. Bill researches Dark Magic at the public library and he speaks with the Cult of Hathor. The old man does get his monster and the young coven knows. They go to his house and confront him. This begins the end of them all.

Debbie has a house for sale and she’s got to get rid of it. Supernatural forces press upon the young lady and she fears she looses her mind. Understand, Ms. Menon is a sensitive, artistic soul. She’s not unfamiliar with magical glyphs. And she’ll resort to using one if no one helps her blessed the cursed Witch’s house.

This day,
Followed by rain and flood
Then drought and more storm
And above any other to come,
This day is remembered.
This day is not forgotten.
Sharp things,
Unworn whilst swept in wash,
All pass except one.
Unsmoothed at all by turbid water,
Comes a horned and spined thing
Alive in the arroyo.
It breathes
Air and sand mixed to mud
Both ocher and brown,
Bitter and smothering gill and lung.
Yet this thing breathes and speaks.
And lies and makes heinous speech.
And says
It is only but one.
Yet births more sharp ilk
Whom come downstream and bask on dry beds.
And eat sheep and wild pigs.
And devour foolish men.
“Name me,”
The terrible thing says.
Yet no man goes close.
And know only the devil it is.
Men whisper to themselves.
And say “Diablo Madre.”
Horrid,
Always pregnant alone,
Bearing more sharp things,
Men only hope it withers and goes.
But for all days to come,
It yet speaks and births its young.
